How To Choose a Counselor vs. Therapist

People in this level require medication and have had recent experience with not being able to complete a withdrawal management program. This level is appropriate for those with severe medical, emotional, behavioral, or cognitive problems. Substance abuse counselors must educate families and friends about addiction and recovery and provide them with resources that will help them support their loved ones in recovery. These resources can include family therapy sessions and support groups.

Many instruments have been developed to screen for alcohol consumption, and several measures have been adapted to screen for specific drugs. In substance abuse treatment, the patient’s motivation to change can be a source of frustration, as counselors have little control over a patient’s desire to change.
